History of AirAsia

AirAsia India brought the AirAsia Group's low-cost playbook to India in 2014, before its operations were fully absorbed into Air India Express by 2024.

A Cross-Border Budget Venture

AirAsia India launched in 2014 as a joint venture between Malaysia's AirAsia Group and Tata Sons, bringing the AirAsia brand's regional low-cost playbook to the Indian domestic market. It began commercial flights in 2015 from its Bengaluru base.

The airline positioned itself around simple fares and point-to-point domestic connections, competing with India's established low-cost carriers on price and network reach.

Tata Group Consolidation

Over time, Tata Sons increased its ownership stake in the joint venture, moving the airline progressively toward full Tata Group control as part of a broader consolidation of its aviation holdings, which also included Air India, Air India Express and Vistara.

This gradual shift set the stage for AirAsia India's operations to eventually be folded into a sibling low-cost carrier rather than continuing as a separate joint venture with the Malaysian AirAsia Group.

Merging Into Air India Express

Through 2023 and into 2024, AirAsia India's domestic network, fleet and crew were progressively integrated into Air India Express, retiring the AirAsia brand from Indian skies as part of the Tata Group's low-cost airline consolidation.

While the AirAsia India brand no longer operates independently, its former routes and much of its network live on within the enlarged Air India Express.
