India's Newest Airline Takes Flight
Akasa Air was founded in 2021, backed by veteran investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and led by former Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube. It launched its first commercial flight in August 2022, connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, entering a market still recovering from pandemic-era disruption.
The airline positioned itself as a modern, efficiency-first low-cost carrier from day one, choosing a single, fuel-efficient aircraft type to keep operations simple and costs predictable.
An All-Boeing, Efficiency-First Model
Akasa built its fleet entirely around the Boeing 737 MAX family, one of the newest and most fuel-efficient narrow-body aircraft available, betting on lower operating costs and a young, standardised fleet as a competitive advantage.
Within its first couple of years, the airline expanded rapidly to most major Indian metros, becoming the fastest new Indian carrier to reach a meaningful fleet size.
Going International
Building on its domestic growth, Akasa added its first international routes connecting India to the Gulf region, a natural next step given strong demand on those corridors.
With continued aircraft deliveries on order, Akasa Air's next phase is expected to focus on deepening its domestic network while selectively growing international connections.
