A Joint Venture Built On Full Service
Vistara was founded in 2013 as a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, at a time when India's domestic market was dominated by low-cost carriers. It launched its first commercial flight between Delhi and Mumbai in January 2015, positioning itself around a genuinely full-service product: three cabin classes, complimentary meals and a premium in-flight experience.
The airline quickly earned a reputation among Indian travellers for consistent service quality, becoming a preferred choice for business and premium leisure travel on domestic trunk routes.
Growing Into International Skies
Vistara expanded from a purely domestic carrier into long-haul international markets, adding flights to destinations including Singapore, London and other key hubs. Its widebody Boeing 787 Dreamliners supported this international ambition.
Along the way, Vistara collected multiple industry awards for service quality, reinforcing its position as one of India's most highly regarded airlines during its decade of independent operation.
Merging Into Air India
As the Tata Group consolidated its airline holdings — Air India, Air India Express, AirAsia India and Vistara — under one strategy, it announced that Vistara would merge into Air India rather than continue as a separate brand.
The merger completed in November 2024, with Vistara's fleet, routes, staff and Club Vistara loyalty members transitioning into the enlarged Air India. Vistara's decade of operation left a lasting mark on service standards across Indian aviation.
