There is no credit card that universally removes every airline and travel portal convenience fee in India. The seller—not the card network alone—decides which booking, payment or service fee appears. A card may provide a fee discount on one airline, cashback at one travel merchant or a temporary coupon on a booking platform, while the same card attracts the normal fee elsewhere. That is why a list titled “zero convenience fee credit cards” becomes inaccurate quickly. The useful question is whether the card reduces the final cost of a particular booking after every fee and reward is counted.
This guide combines two closely related topics from the editorial roadmap: avoiding convenience fees and comparing the Flipkart Axis Bank and Amazon Pay ICICI cards for air tickets. Keeping them together prevents duplicate articles from targeting the same “cashback after flight fee” intent. Benefits below were checked against official bank material, but card terms, merchant coding and portal fees can change. Confirm the live checkout and card terms before paying.
What a flight convenience fee actually is
A convenience fee is normally charged by the airline or booking platform for providing and operating its booking and payment service. It is separate from the airline base fare, taxes and optional products. Sellers use different labels, including convenience, service, processing, payment or platform fee. A page can advertise “zero convenience fee” while still charging another non-refundable service amount, so inspect the complete price breakdown rather than relying on the banner.
The fee can depend on channel, route, passenger count and payment method. It may be charged per passenger, per sector or per transaction. A ₹300 fee on a return journey might therefore become ₹600 or more when multiplied across travellers and legs. Some platforms reduce the fee for UPI, a co-branded card, loyalty member or app booking; others apply the same fee to every online payment. The amount shown on the final payment page is the relevant figure.
Why “zero-fee card” lists mislead
A credit card issuer does not control every merchant's checkout. A card benefit that discounts ₹150 of an IndiGo convenience fee, for example, is not a promise that MakeMyTrip, Air India Express or another merchant will waive its fee. Likewise, a travel portal coupon may offset a fee without changing the fee line itself. The saving is real only for the eligible channel, card, period and transaction described in the terms.
Cards also change. Partnerships end, quarterly caps appear and excluded merchant category codes expand. Annual fees and interest remain even after a travel perk is reduced. Never apply for a card only because an old article calls it a zero-fee flight card. Read the current product page and most-important terms, estimate how many eligible bookings you will make, and compare the expected annual saving with the joining and renewal cost.
Five legitimate ways to reduce the fee
- Compare the airline's website, app and reputable sellers because their final fees can differ.
- Test UPI and eligible card methods on the payment screen without completing duplicate bookings.
- Use a current direct-booking or payment promotion only when its terms explicitly cover your itinerary.
- Check whether an airline loyalty or co-branded card gives a fixed fee discount, then include its annual fee.
- Compare the total after fees with another seller; a nominal waiver can hide a higher underlying fare.
Do not try to avoid a fee by selecting a payment method and then paying through an unauthorised workaround. The booking can fail, the promotion can be reversed or the refund can return through a complicated path. Paying at an airport counter may carry a different fare or service charge and is not a dependable online-fee strategy. The safe method is comparison, not circumvention.
Flipkart Axis Bank: two different travel paths
The Flipkart Axis Bank card has distinct treatment for travel depending on where the ticket is purchased. Axis Bank's published terms say flight and hotel payments on Flipkart earn the card's ordinary cashback rate rather than the higher rate associated with general Flipkart retail purchases. The referenced terms describe 1.5% cashback for Flipkart travel payments. That is materially different from assuming every transaction carrying the Flipkart name earns 5%.
Cleartrip is a separate partner path. Axis Bank's revised card terms effective June 2025 state that eligible Flipkart and Cleartrip purchases continue to earn 5% cashback, with separate ₹4,000 caps per statement quarter for each merchant. The live card terms determine whether a particular flight purchase is eligible and how Cleartrip identifies it. A booking made through another portal generally falls into the card's ordinary-spend treatment unless a separate promotion applies.
Quarterly caps matter for expensive international tickets. If a traveller has already used the Cleartrip cap, another booking in the same statement quarter may earn no incremental partner cashback even though checkout still accepts the card. Axis defines a statement quarter based on the card's statement date, not necessarily January to March. Track accumulated cashback in statements rather than assuming the calendar quarter.
Flipkart Axis exclusions and reversals
Axis excludes categories such as EMI transactions, later EMI conversion, wallet loading and other listed merchant category codes from cashback. A travel booking subsequently converted to EMI can lose the cashback. Refunds and cancellations also reverse the corresponding amount, including partial reversals. Cashback is credited according to the card's statement-cycle rules rather than deducted instantly from the ticket price.
This timing affects comparison. If Cleartrip charges ₹20,500 and the airline charges ₹19,900, an expected 5% cashback could make Cleartrip cheaper—provided the purchase is eligible and the cap remains. If the traveller will cancel, convert to EMI or has exhausted the cap, the airline may be the better choice. Use the full charge for budgeting until the cashback appears.
Amazon Pay ICICI: where flight cashback comes from
The Amazon Pay ICICI card has no joining or annual fee according to ICICI Bank's official FAQ. Prime members earn the published higher rate on eligible Amazon India purchases, non-Prime members earn a lower Amazon rate, eligible Amazon Pay partner transactions can earn another rate, and ordinary purchases generally earn 1%, subject to exclusions. Earnings post to the cardholder's linked Amazon account as Amazon Pay balance after the billing cycle.
The key issue for flights is the checkout path. A ticket bought as an eligible purchase on Amazon may receive the applicable Amazon rate. A transaction on an Amazon Pay partner requires the official “Login and Pay with Amazon” flow to qualify for the partner rate described by ICICI. A direct airline purchase merely paid with the card normally belongs to the other-spend category unless a temporary airline or ICICI promotion says otherwise. The physical card alone does not turn every flight into a 5% Amazon purchase.
Amazon Pay earnings are not statement cash. They are credited to the Amazon account associated with the card and can be spent where Amazon Pay balance is accepted. ICICI states that earnings are transferred after completion of the billing cycle, generally within two working days. A person borrowing someone else's card does not receive the reward in their own Amazon account; it belongs to the card owner.
Amazon Pay ICICI exclusions
ICICI's FAQ excludes rewards for specified categories, including EMI purchases on Amazon, rent, fuel and certain precious-metal or tax payments. Temporary instant-discount campaigns can have additional minimum spends, eligible products and caps. Do not combine the permanent card earn rate with a historic sale offer unless the current terms explicitly allow it. A cancelled or refunded transaction will not retain cashback.
Because the card has no annual fee, an eligible 1% return on direct-airline spend may still be useful when no stronger offer exists. It should nevertheless be compared with an instant bank code, the Flipkart Axis Cleartrip rate, an airline card benefit and fee-free UPI. A lower percentage paid immediately can be more valuable than a higher rate tied to a costlier channel.
A worked net-cost comparison
Assume the airline's direct checkout is ₹15,700 after a ₹350 convenience fee. Cleartrip is ₹16,000 after fees and the Flipkart Axis card is eligible for 5% cashback, with cap available. Its eventual net is ₹15,200. Amazon's eligible flight checkout is ₹15,650; a Prime cardholder earning 5% would have an effective cost of ₹14,867.50, but the return is Amazon Pay balance rather than cash. If the booking is not an eligible Amazon purchase and earns only 1%, its effective cost becomes ₹15,493.50. The classification changes the winner.
Now suppose the traveller must cancel. The platform and airline fees apply, and both cards reverse cashback. The original effective-cost calculation no longer describes the outcome. Compare cancellation deductions and support before choosing a channel for uncertain travel. A ₹500 initial saving can disappear in one additional platform service charge.
Safe booking checklist
- Record the identical flight's final total on the airline and competing sellers.
- Identify whether the fee is per passenger, sector or transaction.
- Confirm merchant path, cashback rate, cap, statement quarter and exclusions.
- Treat future cashback or Amazon Pay balance separately from an instant discount.
- Check refund, cancellation and partial-cancellation servicing before paying.
- Pay the card statement in full; interest will overwhelm a flight cashback.
- Save the live terms and reconcile the subsequent statement or Amazon Pay entry.
Bottom line
Neither Flipkart Axis nor Amazon Pay ICICI is a universal zero-convenience-fee card. Flipkart Axis can be valuable on an eligible Cleartrip purchase within its cap, while Flipkart travel itself follows different published treatment. Amazon Pay ICICI can be strongest when the flight is an eligible Amazon purchase and the cardholder values Amazon Pay balance. On another airline or portal, both may earn only ordinary cashback. Compare the final amount and live terms every time.
