Senior citizen airfares can reduce the cost of domestic travel, but they are not a government-mandated universal discount and they do not work identically across airlines. Each carrier decides whether to offer a concession, which flights qualify, how many discounted seats are available and what proof is required. A headline such as “6% off” or “up to 10% off” normally applies to the base fare rather than the complete ticket. Taxes, airport charges, convenience fees, seats, meals and other add-ons may remain unchanged. The real saving at checkout can therefore be much smaller than the advertised percentage.
The best choice is not automatically the fare marked Senior Citizen. A public sale, family fare, loyalty redemption or ordinary ticket on another airline can produce a lower final amount. Conversely, a concession that looks only marginally cheaper may offer useful flexibility or a simpler direct-booking experience. This guide explains how to establish eligibility, compare like with like, preserve the discount at the airport and arrange assistance without confusing a commercial fare benefit with accessibility rights.
Who qualifies as a senior citizen?
For the major Indian airline concessions covered here, the usual threshold is at least 60 years of age on the date of travel. The exact wording matters. A traveller who turns 60 after the outbound flight does not necessarily qualify for that sector merely because the return occurs after the birthday. Enter the date of birth accurately and check the rule for each journey. Airlines can amend eligibility, so the passenger selector and live terms on the booking date are the final reference.
Air India says senior citizens of all nationalities can qualify for its applicable concession if they are at least 60 on the travel date. It requires a valid passport as age proof, while Indian nationals may alternatively use a valid government-issued photo identity document. IndiGo likewise requires a traveller above 60 and asks for a valid government ID showing the date of birth at check-in. Do not rely on a card that contains a photograph but no readable birth date. The name on the ticket should match the document exactly enough for airline and security verification.
What IndiGo currently offers
IndiGo's official 6E Fares information currently describes a 6% reduction on the base fare for eligible senior citizens travelling on domestic sectors. The airline says the category must be selected through its direct booking channel, and ordinary change and cancellation rules apply as agreed during reservation. Its dedicated page states that inventory is limited and the scheme cannot be combined with other IndiGo promotions. This means the senior price may disappear on a busy flight even while normal seats remain for sale.
Because the reduction is against base fare, do the arithmetic on the final screen. If a ₹7,000 ticket contains a ₹4,000 base fare and ₹3,000 in taxes and fees, 6% of the base is ₹240—not ₹420. A separate ordinary promotion could be better. Search the same flight once with the senior category and once as an ordinary adult, keeping baggage and fare family equal. IndiGo allows senior travellers to appear with other age groups on one booking in its current flow, but verify that the eligible passenger receives the indicated fare and that the booking remains manageable for the whole party.
IndiGo requires date-of-birth proof at check-in. Its terms warn that failure to furnish valid proof can remove the benefit and may cause the booking to be treated under the applicable misuse or cancellation process. Carry the original document in cabin baggage, not in a checked suitcase. Take a clear backup scan for emergencies, but do not assume a phone image will replace the original where the airline requests physical proof.
What Air India currently offers
Air India provides a Senior Citizen option within its concession selector for eligible travel. Its current booking information describes discounted fares for travellers aged 60 and above and indicates that the concession is available on qualifying domestic Economy bookings. Availability and the actual reduction depend on the flight and booking class. Current Air India pages have referred to savings of up to 10% on base fare for selected classes, but “up to” is not a promise that every search will return that percentage.
Select the concession before searching instead of booking an ordinary adult and asking for a retrospective reduction. Confirm the operating airline on every segment, particularly where a flight carries an Air India code but is operated by a partner. Concessions can be limited to Air India-operated services. Read the fare-family rules shown with the result, because the senior label does not automatically make a ticket flexible or refundable. Standard change, cancellation and refund charges can still apply.
Air India's booking FAQs say a passport is acceptable proof of age for all nationalities and Indian citizens can use another government-issued photo ID. They also explain that a passenger who cannot present the required concession proof may be charged a misuse recovery amount with taxes before boarding. The safest practice is to carry the same document used to enter the passenger details. If the booking page offers a payment promotion, verify that it is compatible with concession fares and remains applied on the last screen.
Air India Express and other carriers
Air India Express exposes concessionary passenger choices for senior citizens, students and defence guests in its direct search flow. The price, inclusions and availability should be checked for the exact route and date because a visible category does not establish a fixed network-wide discount. Compare its senior result with the ordinary fare and inspect the branded fare bundle. Low-cost fares can vary materially once a checked bag, seat and meal are added.
Do not assume Akasa Air, SpiceJet or an international airline follows the same age threshold or offers a permanent concession. Use the airline's official passenger selector and current special-fare page. If there is no senior category, search an ordinary fare and separately request any assistance needed. A travel portal may advertise a senior-citizen coupon of its own, but that is a platform promotion with separate terms, not necessarily the airline's concession.
How to compare the true cost
Open two direct searches for the same flight. In the first, choose the senior passenger category; in the second, choose an ordinary adult. Match the cabin and fare family, then record the complete payable amount. Add any baggage, preferred seat, meal or flexibility that the traveller genuinely needs. Next, compare another suitable airline and one reputable booking platform. A portal's initial result is not comparable until its service and payment fees appear.
Suppose an ordinary direct fare is ₹6,450 and the senior fare is ₹6,250. A platform lists ₹6,050 but adds a ₹499 fee at payment, making it ₹6,549. The direct senior fare is cheapest. If the ordinary direct fare accepts a ₹500 bank code that the concession excludes, however, the ordinary fare becomes ₹5,950 and wins. If that bank “discount” is delayed cashback rather than an instant reduction, account for the wait, cap and cancellation conditions instead of subtracting it as guaranteed cash.
- Compare final checkout totals, not the percentage displayed beside base fare.
- Match baggage, seat and change conditions before calling one fare cheaper.
- Check whether a public sale or payment promotion excludes concessional bookings.
- Prefer a sensible nonstop schedule over a punishing connection for a very small saving.
- Include airport transfer costs when comparing airports or late-night departures.
Booking a family together
A mixed-age family may want one reservation so that schedule changes and seat requests are handled together. Some direct airline flows allow senior and ordinary passengers in a single PNR. Confirm that the concession is applied only to eligible travellers and that the displayed total matches the passenger breakdown. If the website forces separate reservations, ask the airline whether it can cross-reference the bookings, especially when the senior traveller needs support from a companion.
Wheelchair assistance is separate from the discount
A traveller does not need to buy a senior fare to request disability or mobility assistance, and age alone does not automatically place a wheelchair in the booking. Assistance is an operational and accessibility service; the concession is a commercial price category. Request the appropriate service directly with the operating airline as early as possible, ideally during booking or within the carrier's stated advance window. Explain whether the passenger can walk to the seat, climb stairs, transfer independently or needs an aisle chair.
Confirm the request after ticketing and again before departure. Arrive earlier than the airline's normal recommendation because assistance coordination and security can take time. Keep medicines, prescriptions, mobility-aid information and essential items in accessible cabin baggage. Battery-powered wheelchairs require advance disclosure of battery type and specifications. Do not pay an unofficial intermediary for standard airport wheelchair assistance; use the airline's official special-assistance channel and ask which services, if any, carry a charge.
Seats, meals and airport comfort
A senior concession rarely includes a complimentary preferred seat. If walking is difficult, the cheapest rear seat may create a long cabin walk, while an exit-row seat has safety eligibility requirements and is unsuitable for many passengers needing assistance. Compare the cost of a standard aisle seat near the front with the overall fare saving. Airlines control seat assignments for safety and can change aircraft, so a paid seat is a preference rather than an absolute guarantee.
Pre-order an appropriate meal where the airline supports it, especially for a long journey or dietary restriction. Cabin crew cannot refrigerate every medicine or guarantee a specific therapeutic diet. Carry permitted snacks and medicines in line with security and medical advice. Lounge access from a bank card is unrelated to the senior fare and can have spend thresholds, guest charges and terminal restrictions; verify it separately rather than building a tight airport plan around an assumed benefit.
Changes, cancellations and refunds
Concession does not mean free cancellation. Review the exact penalty, no-show rule and fare difference before payment. A date change usually costs the applicable fee plus any increase in fare. When a carrier says standard fare rules apply, preserve the emailed rules so they can be referenced if the website later changes. If the airline cancels or materially changes the flight, its disruption options and applicable passenger-protection rules operate separately from the senior discount.
Book through a channel the traveller or family can service. An online travel agency may offer support, but it also adds another party to changes and refunds. Direct booking often gives the clearest path to verify a concession or assistance request. When using an agent, insist on the airline PNR, e-ticket number, passenger-level fare breakdown and written cancellation terms. Do not hand over an OTP or remote access to someone claiming they must “activate” a senior fare.
Documents and airport checklist
- Carry an original valid government photo ID or passport showing the traveller's date of birth.
- Confirm that the ticket name, date of birth, route and operating airline are correct immediately after issue.
- Verify any wheelchair or special-assistance request with the airline before departure.
- Keep medicines, documents and valuables in compliant cabin baggage.
- Check in early and retain the fare rules, payment receipt and airline PNR.
- If proof is lost before travel, contact the airline rather than hoping a concession check will be skipped.
Common misconceptions
Bottom line
Use senior citizen fares as one comparison path, not as a default purchase. Establish eligibility, select the category before searching, compare the final price against ordinary fares and promotions, and carry acceptable age proof. Give greater weight to a safe schedule, manageable airport journey and clear change conditions when the price difference is small. Deal4Flight can help identify relevant payment offers, but the airline's live concession terms and issued ticket remain the authoritative record.
